The latest statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveal that more than half (59%) of Australia’s 3 million permanent visa holders, who arrived in Australia between 1 January 2000 and 10 August 2021, are now Australian citizens.
The data shows that the majority of permanent migrants were on a Skilled visa (64%), followed by those on a Humanitarian visa (61%).
The statistics also offer new insights into permanent migrants’ visa history, as most of them were granted a permanent visa as their first visa (1.7 million or 58%) and 1.3 million started on a temporary visa, namely the temporary student visa.
In terms of top occupations, 10% of migrants from the Family visa stream and 14% of migrants from the Humanitarian visa stream were employed as Carers and Aides. While for migrants from the Skilled visa stream, the most common occupations were Business, Human Resources and Marketing.
The highest number of permanent migrants were born in India, followed by China, England, the Philippines, and South Africa.
The vast majority of the new arrivals (56%) opted to call either Sydney or Melbourne home. The next popular areas were Perth (12.1%), Brisbane (9.7%) and Adelaide (5.6 %).
Overall, the demography statistics continue to showcase that Australia is one of the most successful multicultural societies in the world.
