Here are the top 5 reasons to consider higher education in Australia in 2022:
Safe and welcoming
Australia is a safe and welcoming place to live and study, consistently ranking among the safest countries in the world. It is also safe in terms of the high Covid vaccination rates among the local population and effective managing of the spread of the pandemic.
Professor Iain Martin, vice-chancellor of Deakin University, a prominent university in the Australian state of Victoria, remarked, "When you arrive in Victoria, you will be joining to the community where 92% of everyone over 12 years are doubly vaccinated and understand the importance of safe community."
Focus on real-world learning
Research confirms that the best learning outcome is the learning that is active, engaging, and relevant. Australian universities are known for their high-quality education with industry-focused courses that emphasise real-world learning more than theoretical knowledge. The learning models are specifically designed to help learners become industry-ready and realise their career plans.
Mathew Johnston, Minister Counsellor (Education and Research) for South Asia, Australian High Commission, speaking about his outlook on providing the best of Australian education for international students, said, "The strategy is not just about valuing what has come in the past in terms of international students, but also looking into the future that how we could support our students and diversify on the modes of learning for better employability.";
Student-friendly cities
Home to several leading universities, Melbourne and Sydney have been consistently ranked among the most student-friendly cities in the world. Melbourne and Sydney are placed at 6th and 8th positions respectively in the QS Best Student Cities 2022 list.
Compiled by global higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds, better known as QS, the best student cities 2022 list compared 115 cities across the world on indicators including desirability by students, affordability, diversity, safety, and employment opportunities after graduation. Some of the leading universities in Melbourne and Sydney are the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Deakin University, and others.
Increase part-time work hours
Michelle Wade, Commissioner for South Asia, Global Victoria, believes part-time work is an important aspect of the Australian education experience.
Traditionally, international students in Australia have a 20-hour-per-week limit when school is in session. Recently, the government has agreed to a proposal to increase the 40-hour a fortnight cap for foreign students while they are studying, with it likely to be doubled to 80 hours a fortnight or 40 hours a week.
Local businesses around university campuses have been facing a staff shortage due to international border closure and the impact of the pandemic. This is expected to increase opportunities for international students arriving in Australia in 2022.
Many Australian universities have divisions to support international students in their hunt for part-time work.
Graduate employment opportunities, work visa extension, and salary rise
Recently, the Morrison government announced that it will increase the length of stay on the Temporary Graduate visa from two to three years for a master's degree by coursework graduates, matching that of master's degree by research graduates. This is great news for international students looking to pursue their postgraduate degrees this year.
The full-time employment rates among graduates of higher education institutions in Australia have increased slightly from 68.7% - 68.9% this year, according to the latest national survey on graduate outcomes which has been completed by graduates four to six months after finishing their studies.
As per the graduate outcomes survey report, the median full-time undergraduate salary level increased slightly from $64,700 in 2020 to $65,000 in 2021. The report further points out that in 2021, for postgraduate coursework graduates, the median salary was $89,700, while for postgraduate research graduates, it reached $95,000. These are likely to increase in 2022 with high vaccination rates and borders reopening boosting the Australian economy.
"There's a very strong recognition in Australia of the relationship between quality education, employability of the graduates, and the contribution they can make to the Australian economy," said Monica Kennedy, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade.
